The Cayman shares its platform and engines with the Boxster across all generations — which means the service and reliability profile is similar. The 987.1 Cayman shares IMS and RMS vulnerabilities with the 986/987 Boxster. The 981 and 718 Cayman use the updated MA1 engine and are significantly more reliable in standard service use.

The Cayman GT4 (981 and 982) uses the 911's flat-six engine rather than the four-cylinder fitted to the standard 718. The GT4 requires the same service attention as the 991 911 — including correct oil grade, short oil change intervals for track use, and brake system attention proportional to the car's capability.
