Porsche Boxster by Generation — IMS, AOS and What to Watch For

The 986 and early 987 Boxster share the M96 engine with the 996 911 — which means they share the same IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing vulnerability. This is the most important issue to understand before buying or servicing a pre-2009 Boxster. IMS bearing failure can destroy the engine without warning and costs $15,000+ to repair.

Rennen recommends IMS bearing replacement on all 986 and 987.1 Boxsters where the bearing has not already been replaced. The job is best done alongside a rear main seal (RMS) replacement and AOS (air-oil separator) service since access is already gained. Catching these three items at once is far more cost-effective than addressing them separately.

The 987.2 (2009+) and 718 models resolved the IMS issue with the MA1 engine. These later cars are significantly more reliable but still require correct service intervals, proper PDK fluid changes, and PIWIS diagnostics for any electrical or drivetrain fault codes.

Boxster Cooling, Roof and Drainage — Adelaide-Specific Issues

The Boxster's mid-engine layout places the cooling system in a compact space that can suffer from coolant degradation and pipe cracking under Adelaide's heat load. Regular coolant condition checks and replacement at the correct interval are particularly important on high-mileage 986 and 987 models.

The Boxster's convertible roof drainage system is another Adelaide-specific concern. Blocked roof drains allow water to pool in the lower sill areas, leading to floor corrosion and electrical issues. During Adelaide's winter rain season, a blocked drain on a Boxster parked outside can cause significant damage quickly. Rennen checks drain condition as part of Boxster service.
